Energy drinks containing vitamin B12 and other nutrients are on every shelf, promising to increase stamina, boost metabolism, and ward off every disease known to modern medicine. What’s the deal? Do they even work? Here are the bare facts about health claims with energy drinks.

“It’s un-B-lievable!”

Vitamin B12 is beneficial for sustaining a healthy metabolism, increasing stamina, supporting neurological health, supporting cognitive functioning, and aiding your body in delivering oxygen through healthy red blood cells.

So, it’s no wonder that many energy drink manufacturers have jumped on the B12 vitamin bandwagon, promising to help you lose weight, boost your metabolism, and rejuvenate. Is it all hype?

B12 is everywhere- almost

Vitamin B12 is in most foods that you probably eat every day. Unless you’re a vegan, then you consume adequate amounts of vitamin B12 in meat, fish, milk, cheese, and eggs.

Likewise, energy drinks containing vitamin B12 don’t necessarily provide you with more B12 than you would eat in an average day, anyways.

Vitamin B12- What is it?

How much vitamin B12 do you need? Scientific evidence suggests that even people who don’t have vitamin B12 deficiency gain enormous health benefits- increased energy and mental alertness- by taking generous doses of vitamin B12.

  • One clinical study focusing on high-dose vitamin B12 found that taking 2,500-5,000 mcg of vitamin B12 every few days led to a 50%-80% increase in stamina, mental focus, and overall wellbeing after only a few weeks.
  • In a double-blind crossover study on vitamin B12 for treating tiredness, people who suffered daily fatigue but didn’t have vitamin B12 deficiency or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) experienced a boost of stamina, enhanced concentration skills, and improved mood after taking 5,000 mcg of vitamin B12 twice daily for two weeks.

Vitamin A

The upper limit for vitamin A supplementation is 3,000 IU for adult males and females.  Health experts strongly advise meeting your vitamin A requirement through dietary sources like eggs, fortified milk, and liver, as opposed to pill form.  Unless you have vitamin A deficiency, a risk factor for Crohn’s disease and celiac disease, there is no need to supplement with extra vitamin A.

  • Vitamin B12 helps your body repair cells. Researchers who studied athletic performance with vitamin B12 deficiency noticed a high correlation of poor energy levels, decreased sports performance, torn muscles, and inability to build proper muscle tone.  But after vitamin B12 supplementation, scientists noticed increased stamina, improved muscle tone, and restored athletic abilities.

In a double-blind crossover study focusing on vitamin B12 for treating tiredness, people who had low energy but did not suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency or chronic fatigue syndrome were given 5,000 mcg of vitamin B12 or a placebo two times per day for two weeks. 

While the placebo had no effect, tired individuals who received the vitamin B12 injections noticed a significant increase in energy, mental focus, and improved mood.

Similarly, a separate study on people with normal vitamin  B12 levels found that regular supplementation of high-dose vitamin B12 resulted in significantly better mood, increased energy, and improved cognitive functioning, versus the placebo, which had no effect on mood or energy.   

In this study, doses varied from 3,000 mcg of vitamin B12four times per week to 9,000 mcg of vitamin B12 per day.

How much vitamin B12 do I need?

The USRDA for vitamin B12 for healthy individuals ranges from .4 mcg -2.8 mcg of vitamin B12.  However, that’s not nearly enough to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency, the standard prescribed vitamin B12 shot amounting to 1000 mcg per week.  And that’s just to prevent neurological damage and cognitive impairments.

To maintain healthy energy levels with vitamin B12 (even if you’re not deficient) you might need to take anywhere upwards of 3,000 mcg of B12, several times a week.  Since there is no upper limit established for vitamin B12 supplementation, there’s no danger of overdosing on B12.
